My portraitpainting in oils: 'The art connoisseur and his wife'

I am proud to anounce that with this portrait I was selected to participate in the exhibition Long Live Rembrandt. (from July 15th - Sept. 15th 2019) This is the story of this portrait: When my father, Rembrandt expert and author of the six-part book edition 'Rembrandt and the Bible', had given me this portrait commission, I knew that the bar was set high. We shared the admiration for Rembrandt's gift to display 'real' people and how he could catch a glance that will always intrigue you. How Rembrandt could tell a whole story with one image, how he let clothing and objects speak and subtly depict relationships between people. During the posing sessions we came up with the idea of basing the composition on a work by Jacob van Campen 'Double portrait of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) and Suzanna van Baerle (1599-1637)'. I tried to fit in ingredients from Rembrandts portrait work. Like the look of my mother, that reveals her somewhat questioning and perhaps a little resigned view on it all. She always took care of the family and assisted him with proofing proofs and searched for special catalogs he wanted. He was a great Frisian man, always studying art and busy at that time with the contemporaries of Rembrandt. His gaze is dreamily focused on the infinite knowledge of beauty, far away from us ordinary mortals. That's how I wanted to portray this special couple, my parents.. Sometimes I pick a theme to work on.. This time I was inspired by all the little vases and pottery from my parental home. Drawing is always the first step. It is so very important to keep exercising this skill! Most of the times I can't appreciate the drawings at first, but it helps creating a plan for painting or printing. And later on, when I look at the drawings again, I often think 'Hey! That wasn't so bad' ;) Here you can see the sketches and try-outs of work that is now in my shop (e.g. Still life with cotton; Monoprint - Still life no. 19)
