    Applying Gesso

    Applying Gesso

    Here I am applying multiple levels of acrylic gesso. The surface coating is critical for my work as the first step in any piece is to draw out my subject. Retail canvas has a surface (weave) texture which literally chews up pencil lead (thus pencils) comparable to the consuming use of paper towels for window washing. The ultra-smooth surface is solidified after the drawing with an application of spray-on surface fixative few more coatings of clear and opaque gesso. Once the surface is smooth to the touch, painting commences.
