ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Drawing and painting is a wonderful way to spend your time and it never feels like work. Even after a full day working en plein air battling with the weather when you are freezing and have to rush for shelter or chase a drawing caught in a gust of wind or even a hurricane... perhaps.
I love to draw horses either from imagination or from observation. Recently I attended classes sculpting horses at Royal Drawing School. This involved studying horse anatomy and deportment (gait) - this helped me to understand how to draw horses more accurately and how to visualise them from different points of view.
Other classes drawing from the built environment or in parks and gardens was inspiring and it helped me to look intensely - it made observational drawing central to my practice, e.g Lockdown Landscapes, Kensington Gardens, Pistoia (Italy)
When I am unable to work outside I draw and paint narratives - graphite and watercolour - usually based on two point perspective with loosely placed elements within the composition - not necessarily correctly. Here I'm driven by instinct not by observation constraints - but it is always figurative, e.g. Dystopia 1&2.
And thanks to Covid I have discovered print making at home. Using Zoom classes I have learned how to make mono prints, etchings, linocuts and woodcuts and this gave me an outlet for my sketchbook drawings and thumbnail sketches, e.g. Pan (mono print), Zapata's Retreat (scratchboard), Monarch Butterfly (linocut)
A successful work travels through various emotional stages: initial enthusiasm, doubt, despondence anxiety, assessment, and conviction before it can be shown and not necessarily in that order.
