One of a series of work exploring young stags in late summer/ early autumn. I have used the watercolour in a gestural, fluid way then overworked with pastel and pure pigment. I have used an eraser and also scratched into the paper to suggest long grasses.
I visited a Warwickshire stately home parkland herd in 2015 and captured some beautiful images of the yearlings relaxing together in golden low light just after rain. It was an idyllic atmosphere, a moment when time seems to have stood still.
I am fascinated by the sculptural quality of the newly grown antlers, and have also worked on a number of pen and ink drawings which examine these.
