I have painted tulips on several occasions, but never such a colourful bunch. I saw these on a gloomy spring day, and they immediately cheered me up. As the sun came out, I put them on a windowsill and the colours seemed to leap out.
I worked with thick paint to capture the intensity of the colour, and I let the background on the right fall off into darkness to strengthen the contrast.
The painting is framed in a simple slim black wooden frame.
