Artist's description:
The project "XIAN - Myths of the Beauties" was inspired by the Four Great Beauties of ancient China who changed the history of the four different dynasties in ancient times: Diao Chan, Yang Guifei, Wang Zhaojun, and Xishi. These Four Great Beauties were renowned for their unparalleled beauty which they used to exercise influence over kings and warriors.
This photograph depicts the beauty of Diao Chan whose beauty was described as: “Beauty which outshines the moon and shames the flowers“. Diao Chan was one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. Unlike the other three beauties, there is no known evidence suggesting her existence, she is mostly a fictional character. Diaochan is best known for her role in Luo Guanzhong's historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", which romanticises the events in the late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period. In the novel, she had a romance with the warrior Lü Bu. This legend embodies in an exaggerated way her beautiful appearance in the eyes of the Chinese people.
The muse in this photograph is Maya Murofushi, famous Japanese actress and model, Miss World Supermodel 2010 who just won the Best Actress award at the 37th International Festival of Cinema in Florence for her role in an Italian film.
