Artist's description:

I got the idea for this painting while at Fleswick Bay on the Solway coast. The bay has some wonderful rock formations and I've painted several pictures of them.
While I was sketching my daughter who'd gone for a swim suddenly called: “Dad, what's this?” She'd noticed a large piece of an old marine engine exposed as the tide went out.
My wife later discovered it was the remains of a Spanish iron ore ship that sank in the bay in 1906/7. Over the years the ore had bled into the metal, pebbles had become embedded into it and the weed that had grown on it gave it an organic life of its own.
I like abstract paintings but don't have the imagination to produce them from my head but enjoy finding subjects from which I can extract an abstract image. I call it “abstract realism.” This was an ideal example.
I have a photograph of the complete engine and email a copy to anyone who buys the picture so that can its derivation.
