The Ashdown Forest in East Sussex is one of my favourite places to walk my dog, sketchbook in hand and always looking for new material for inspiration. This is one of a series of three paintings, all of them based on a particular circular walk that combines rugged, steep hills, shady valleys and winding forest paths. The ‘mood’ of the forest changes daily from bitingly cold to wet and windy or in the case of this painting, beautifully sunny, a feeling I wanted to get across with the vibrant greens of early summer and complimentary cerulean blue skies.
