Whistle Drove is based on the flat, understated landscape of the Cambridgeshire Fenlands. There is a depth and a reassuring solidity here, but you have to look again and again to begin to see the essence of this landscape. This is a provisional and functional topography, nothing superfluous or extraneous added, no frills or fripperies, just earth and sky, punctuated by straggling unmade roads and perfunctory man-made waterways.
