This is a painting of a wild sea at the entrance to West Bay Harbour in Dorset, England. The harbour is one of the few safe sanctuaries for sailors in Lyme Bay. I often paint from the perspective of being 'at sea' rather than on the shore and in this painting was imaging the power of the waves as the entrance to the harbour (and safety!) is glimpsed against a backdrop of racing clouds, with sunlight occasionally picking out the tops of the dramatic cliffs. WM Turner also painted the coastline in this area, which is now designated a World Heritage site.
