A commission in 2011 challenged me to go in a very different direction than I had before with my wallpiece construction, and I started working on long spindle shapes and curved forms that did not fit in with my previous work or construction techniques. In response to the designs I was formulating I had to come up with new methods of assembly for curved plates tightly fitted together. This wallpiece was one of the first results to come out of that after the original commission, and I think this piece is one of the most successful.

The overall shape of this piece resembles an African shield, while its details and colors look more like shields out of fantasy worlds. The overlapping plates are reminiscent of chitin or of lapped hides, with colors reminiscent of semiprecious stones.

Like most of my wallpieces this one can be hung in any orientation, on any sort of wall. It can be hung on one screw in a wall stud or a drywall anchor on an ordinary wall, or I can provide a clip to hang it more securely. If it is hung horizontally it takes two screws. This piece may be hung out of doors in a reasonably sheltered location.
