This wood engraving continues a series of works based on my fascination with the Underground. In my artwork I love to explore the dynamics of light and dark. In this image the ceiling of this ‘cut and cover’ station is like a velvet black void, whilst the platform edge becomes a drifting white ribbon.
This view looks westwards from the end of the platform at St James’s Park station. I made my initial, rat-level sketches last summer, and I loved the way the words ‘mind the gap’ emerged from the floor, with the surrounding surface melting away in the heat.
