This painting came from a beautiful photograph given to me by good friends who have a home in Montepulciano, Italy. I find this scene to be quintessentially Tuscan. I was inspired to paint this setting for several reasons: the patina of the home with its crumbling plaster and weathered brickwork, the strong backlighting of the Tuscan sun, and the charm of the architecture. I imagined the respite this doorway would provide from the strong, summer sun reflecting off of the many stone surfaces.
