Artwork description:

This year I had been looking forward to seeing the collection of new Hockney ipad drawings called the Arrival of Spring. It is a huge exhibition and the vivid use of colour and mark making is very dramatic.
I decided to do some observational work based where I was staying in May 2021, using an ipad. So a change of subject for me, and way of working.
To be outside with an ipad is to have the whole potential rucksack of paints, pastels, pencils plus paper/canvas ready to hand. Yet there it is all in one device.
It has meant that even in a strong wind where I was working at the coast, it was possible to spend time observing and experiencing the sea and coastline.
This is different to the way I usually work, as painting, and now printmaking is a measured activity for me done in the studio.
These prints from my ipad drawings are a direct experience of the landscape, and traditional hand eye response to both a dramatic visual stimulus and the changing atmosphere of the moment.

Materials used:

Photographic Matt Paper
