Painting is a wonderfully mysterious moving (as opposed to sitting still) meditation for me that is filled with wonder. Without being conscious of a reference in painting this, or of the meaning of its name, I simply felt something profound in this image and the words "touching earth" came to me. The "earth witness" Buddha is one of the most common iconic images of Buddhism. It depicts the Buddha sitting in meditation with his left hand, palm upright, in his lap, and his right hand touching the earth. There is much written and said about that gesture.
The substrate is 144 lb Yupo. The sheet is 40" x 26" (101.6 cm x 66 cm) and there is a 1.5"" (3.8 cm) border around the image for framing. Acrylic and its mediums adhere nicely to Yupo and it doesn't buckle like paper from water or moisture.
