Artist's description:

The simple pleasure you get when looking at a painting that stops you in your tracks and feeling your emotions respond, your soul wakes up and your heart swells with love.

For me that is the response I got when I saw my first 'encaustic' painting by an Australian Artist Jenny Sages who is now in her 80's and is still producing beautiful work.

The term encaustic means 'to burn' and is 1000's of years old, the fact that this medium is rich in history is even more enticing for me. Painting in hot wax is dynamic, where anything goes and the possibilities are endless. I have found this medium an intoxicating release of experimentation that brings both, fear and joy.

I was lucky enough to attend an encaustic workshop with Jenny Sages over two days last year to learn her technique and while I gained some confidence and told myself I could use this medium as I love it so much but whenever I do I am still with the feeling that with every work the outcome is completely unknown, I just have to remember to 'breath'.

I have started to create little abstract pieces that I will add to as I expand my visual language. This is the first of the series and titled 'Time Flies # 1', the second is also available.

Materials used:

wax medium, wax paint, dry pigments, scalpels, ceramic tools, dentist tools and spatulas
