Artist's description:

"Through the Dark City" is the last line in the poem by William Carlos Williams, "The Great Figure", which inspired Charles Demuth to make the painting "The Figure 5 in Gold". This is a riff on both the poem and the painting.

Among the rain
and lights
I saw the figure 5
in gold
on a red
firetruck
moving
tense
unheeded
to gong clangs
siren howls
and wheels rumbling
through the dark city.
