This is one of a series of pictures inspired in execution by the work of Kleitias, the ancient Athenian vase painter in the black-figure style. A picture of a detail from his François Vase depicting Ares kneeling hung in the lounge of my childhood home. The subject matter is from a short story by Donald Barthelme which always intrigued me.
