I wanted to make a series of feathers not only as I have a fascination with birds, but also as an experiment to challenge the nature of mosaic. I attempted to capture the delicate and fine nature of a feather by using thin strips of glass.
I began with making a set of paving stones with these yellow-red feathers which look great, so I made this mosaic art picture. I have used stained glass cut into thin strips and set on edge to show the fleck inside, my hand-gilded glass and glass milliefiori stones. The feather is set into a black cement mixture which is then painted in a satin black paint. The edge of the black surround is gilded in gold coloured metal leaf. The black box frame comes without glass but can be fitted if you prefer.
