Painting is research for me. In this piece, I articulated a new question: how does the viewer affect the scene? I start with this question practically, as in, I am a viewer and I am making certain choices about what to show and how to show it. So I am a viewer as an artist, viewing life then representing it. The appreciators of art are viewers. In conversations and writing, they represent what they see.
But I wonder about those things that are within the viewer that somehow come across. We have assumptions, experiences, and lenses. I know what I experienced in the moments preceding a painting. I wonder if those experiences (feelings, certainties and uncertainties, dreams, visions, and daily narratives) are present in the work.
The runway is an external location, a setting for an external event. But all events have interior contexts.
