This is a fantasy portrait of Queen Marie of Romania , born in 1875 into the British royal family as Princess Marie of Edinburgh. As wife of King Ferdinand I and Queen of Romania, she was beloved by her people due to her boldness during the First World War, as she earned for her country the international recognition of Greater Romania (including the province of Transylvania) giving rise to her description as "truly the only man in Romania". Due to her devotion to her people she was named "Mother of the wounded" and "The Soldier-Queen" .
