Artist's description:

St Ives is perhaps most well known for its beautiful harbour and iconic pier. 'Smeatons Pier', designed by John Smeaton and built between 1767 and 1770 has the curious appearance of apparently featuring two lighthouses (one is actually a lookout and marks the end of the original pier which was extended later when an actual lighthouse was added).

Behind the 'new' pier, at low water, can be seen the poignant remains of the original wooden pier, now reduced to no more than a series of decaying uprights, reminiscent of some prehistoric sea creature, the old pier bravely fights against the relentless power of the Atlantic.
