Artist's description:

In Leoncavallo's dramatic opera "I Pagliacci" (The Clowns), Canio is the leader of an acting troupe and plays the part of Pagliaccio the clown. At the point of preparing for his act, his heart is broken when he learns of his young wife's infidelity. With his hopes shattered and his heart broken he has to go on with the show, face his audience and make them laugh.
Here we see the face of Pagliaccio as he prepares to make his entrance on stage to face the audience and play his part.
Or are we simply seeing the face of a singer preparing to play his part in the opera?
And is there a difference between the two?
