The Last Lifeguard Stand is from my Painted Polaroids collection, a photographic series of 20 lifeguard stands unique to South Florida beaches. These images have a calming, surreal look, although the mood of each is influenced by the sky and ocean present on that day.
This series of 20 lifeguard stands were photographed with Polaroid SX-70 film and manipulated by hand on location minutes after exposure. I added the painted effect and border exclusive to this collection later at the studio.
Like Polaroid film, many of these lifeguard stands and huts have since been replaced with modern versions that lack the originals’ charm. I’m grateful I captured these images because they conjure up the nostalgic feel of a time and place that can never be recreated.
