Artist's description:

This painting is in the Language of Flowers series and was published in an exclusive calendar by W H Smith. The borders are of violets which mean 'music', and angelica which means 'divine inspiration'. The inner miniature painting illustrates Orpheus playing his lute, of whom it is said that violets grew where he walked. The miniature also illustrates oats which in the Language of Flowers symbolise the 'soul of music'.
