This is part of a series of watercolours from 2015 that have been focusing on close ups of everyday, mundane objects that have been visually altered into something beautiful by time, decay and rust.
This is a gate latch on the gate into a Cornish Graveyard. Handled by so many people from all walks of life and over many generations its rust and dents tell their own story. I have also painted the reverse of this Gate latch, as if you are entering the Graveyard, entitled 'The Gate latch'. Both the pieces work well on their own but would make a stunning pair if hung together.
It is 36cm x 35cm and has been painted with Daniel Smith artist quality watercolurs on Bockingford paper
