Original artwork description:

This painting began shortly after I'd been to the MOMA in New York City and spent some time before one of Monet's waterlily paintings on permanent display there. His waterlilies stick me as a kind of floating world, with the water in the usual sky-space of a landscape: not that I've done that here, but the sky and the water are so completely reflections of one another, there's a unity that's achieved. Mine is a river or seascape with small islands of trees: perhaps something like The Thousand Lakes region of New York state and Canada, or some of the small islands one sees of the Coast of Maine. I'm using the Impressionist palette and dotting/dabbing methods of painting to create the sense of flickering or scattered light. Painted in oil on canvas (28x22 inches), framed in a 3-inch wide plein-aire style mahogany frame that brings the overall dimensions to 34x28, this painting is signed "Gray" on the front and with my full name, date, place, in verso. Clear-coated with artist-grade varnish to protect from abrasion and dust, this work ships with a digitally-registered Certificate of Authenticity.

Materials used:

canvas, oil paint, varnish
