I had just recently sat through an amateur production of Arthur Miller's award winning play from back in 1953. As I was thinking about it afterwards, I wondered why he had given it its title. I knew what was a crucible; and that the word could be used in several ways. It was only when I thought through the possible definitions that the aptness of the title became clear to me - a great test; a container, which can withstand great amounts of heat; a place where forces come together to bring about change. At least metaphorically, all three were present in the play.
This work is an abstraction - of a type very unusual for me - of my feeling of the forces depicted in the play, which seemed to relate to primordial instincts. I offer this work merely as an example of a distraction from my usual images.
