When my cousin drove me around his neighborhood near Yuba City , I caught sight of the Sutter Buttes and was immediately enchanted by this circle of tough-looking little mountains rising up out of miles of flat Northern California land. Apparently it was a sacred place for the Native Americans, who saved themselves from rising water in this flat valley land by camping out on the Buttes whenever a flood came. Other than in times of flood, no one wanted to live there - aside from truly enormous rattlesnakes.
