Artist's description:

Oil on 3cm deep 'box' canvas, varnished. One of a pair that can be hung separately or together. Hanging wire attached, perfect to hang now.

This is one of a series of work I did while living in Brunei, Borneo. I was very interested in the monkey troupes that lived in the open spaces close to human activity. Scavengers and ostensibly wild, though unafraid of humans, they were always in the corner of your eye, occupying the fringes. Rude, defiant and unapologetic they coexisted with us. Occasionally they mugged shoppers at the supermarket, vandalised cars and emptied back door bins! I experienced much rarer primates including the proboscis monkey but I found the macaques' uneasy truce with civilization fascinating.

I would spend time observing them from the safety of a locked car in the Supasave carpark, and then photograph and make sketches until they zoned in on me, then go back to my studio to work on paintings in oils on canvas, and ink line drawings.
