Original artwork description:

It's a hot sunny afternoon in August with lots of reflected light on the old common. Evidence of ancient flora is in the foreground, lopped trees and stumps appear cyan, etched deeply with bark patterns. I'm facing the declining sun and have to squint to cut back the light. What is the base / background colour? I've dispensed with charcoal and headed straight into watercolours and can only guess at the colour values beyond 500 yards. An ancient herd of barren cows drift past oblivious of me and plagued by flies. How much white space should there be - can I use automatism to good effect?

Materials used:

watercolour and gouache
