This painting came about through applying colour using perspex squeegees. I built a ground of Indian Yellow and transparent Red Oxide, then worked into these with opaque and transparent whites and lastly added opaque Phthalo Turquoise. Working with Michael Harding's gloriously coloured and buttery oils allows very beautiful textures and transitions to develop between the layers of colour. The title is from a move in T'ai-Chi where active and passive elements are brought into focus in a particular way to meet at the middle through emptiness and fullness. This painting has a beautiful balance between the reddish earth colour and the coolness of the turquoise, hence the title.
