I have been photographing these tulips, hyacinths and narcissi for days to record the various stages the flowers pass through, and so that I can capture the moment when the blooms look their absolute best. I love it when the tulip petals open as far as they can and the stems grow so long that in the end they start to create these mad shapes in the vase. I have been using a composite image of a number of these photographs for this painting and built up several layers of paint on the canvas to create the chaos of leaves and stalks, the flowers are painted 'impasto' very thickly with a big brush so that you see the texture of the oil paint.
