I wanted to create a new large framed Snow Leopard leather art painting to start 2022. It took some time to find the right reference image - as with most of my artwork I like to create in a realism style. Although the painting may look monochrome black & white, there is quite a lot of colour that gives the painting depth. I like using greens, blues and purples, they give a lift.
The name 'Sabu' is the Tibetan word for Snow leopard.
The reason for using leather as a medium to paint on is often asked. In this case as with all of my leather art, the leather hide chose is not by accident. The texture and colour must add to the composition, in this case the size of texture perfectly added to the semi-3D effect. Some artists prepare the ground to give texture. I use the natural and random texture of leather in the same way.
The painting process I have developed over the past 10+ years has enabled me to exploit a feature that many mediums avoid. My leather art is not behind glass. The process and materials I use means that the leather art is waterproof and should be seen and appreciated - including touching as you can sculpture. I paint art on leather jackets as well so the process is well proven.
