This delicate little piece is a three-dimensional drawing of a Small White butterfly. The Small White, more commonly known as the Cabbage, is an iconic British butterfly, conjuring memories of summer days and wildflower meadows. It is one of my series of British butterflies. This drawing is life-sized, and has been cut out to allow it's wings to pop-up.
The underlying drawing is done in pencil, with colour added with a watercolour wash.
I find that the best way to learn about the things around me is to draw them. I love the challenge of working out the best pencil marks to make to describe the thing in front of me. I aim for my drawings to be calm and gentle.
The pop-up butterfly is protected by a simple white box frame. It is ready to hang.
