Artist's description:

After dark, the sister of the 12 year old Tuareg bride came out to represent her in the last evening of the wedding celebrations, amongst other things to receive the couples' gifts. I just fell in love with her dress....

I had been introduced to the 20 year old bridegroom and some of the guests and was later taken to a bedroom where a thin, very young looking and frightened girl lay on a bed - maybe she was just frightened of me........ For once in my life I was stuck for words and it took a few minutes to regain my composure and exchange pleasantries in broken French and sign language: although I doubt if she understood French anyway, being a child of the desert.

She had travelled for two weeks with her family from the salt mines in the north of Mali to reach Timbuktu: her mother and sister would apparently remain with her for some months I was pleased to hear

The next day my guide expressed his disapproval at the age of the bride and muttered something about the government trying to do something to end such practices but the Tuareg have ancient customs........

I often wonder what happened to them all after the jihadist destruction of much of Timbuktu.
