I adore Israeli shuks!! The sounds of haggling and arguing, the goods for sale in every color in the rainbow, the smells of fish and flowers and baked goods and spices, seeing the variety of ethnicities and religions represented in the shoppers, all these experiences that just remind me of home! I visited Shuk Mahane Yahuda during my last trip to Israel in 2011. I observed the woman in the center of this painting lost in her own world as she stood there waiting for her order to be filled. The stillness in the chaos of the market struck me as so beautiful. While conditions in The Shuk are too crowded for plein air work, I painted this in the style of plein air with quick expressive brush stroke.
