This is a colorful, energetic composition in bright acrylic colors on top of an underpainting in watercolor on textured polypropylene. There is a lot going on in this painting, but it feels very balanced. When I work on a painting I want to create a self contained world that invites the viewer in and asks them to stay a while. I hope this painting gives the viewer a nice place to let their gaze linger without getting board and prompts them to think about the nature of the universe we find ourselves in.
I chose to work with thin acrylic paints and heavy clear acrylic media because I enjoy the way the substances interact with each other. The thin acrylics, Golden High Flow and Liquid Acrylics, push into the surrounding medium in some cases, and hold their own crisp, clean boundaries in others. It allows me to create shapes organically, and gives the painting a feeling of being alive while I am working. I set actions in motion and let things go on their own for the most part, intervening occasionally with a brush or a pallet knife.
