Artist's description:

This ink on canvas image came to me, skull first.
When applying ink to the canvas it actually began to frighten me, as I am not used to images of stark human parts such as bare muscle or bone.

The sticks it is balanced on came next.

As is to humanize the image for me, the person speaking to it appeared next. In my eyes, this person is male, but I enjoy mixing gender signals, and others often label him as female. This happens to me in waking life, as well.

The familiar, friendly way the person seems to be speaking makes this image less about anything gory, and more about ancestry. Connections to our past are important in order for use to make sense of where we are going:

The roads we come from were traveled already. We walk new paths for those who did not live to see them.

Unlike some other pieces, the image is unwashed. It did not need it, and it told me so.
