Sexism Project: Top Pop Equality of Woman Artists = Male Artists
This work is for the “Sexism” Project, a project to highlight the indifferences and inequalities between woman and male Artist in the high end Art Market, with,
“only 1 out of 100 of the top lots sold at auction in 2015 was by a woman, and none of the world’s Top Ten richest living artist artists are woman”
And the artwork will be promoted for International Woman’s Day on 8th March.
Within this work, I have made a list of my favourite Woman Artists, arrange aphetically by surnames, starting from the far top left column, at “Angela Bulloch”, then “Tracey Emin”, in Pink, and alternating with Male Artists, starting at Bottom Left second column at “Banksy”, then “Damien Hirst", in Blue. The text continues onto the next column, follows a sequence or order known as “Conceptual Art” and finishing on the far right column with “Rachel Whiteread”, and “Ai Wei Wei” and contains 10 Woman Artists, and 8 Men Artists.
The Vertical Stripes contains 13 vertical stripes, 7 for Woman Artists and 6 for Male Artists. This ratio has been chosen as it’s approximately the same ratio of Woman to Male Artists on Artfinder. Such that Woman Artists 7/13 * 100 = 54% and Male Artists 6/13 * 100 = 46%. (Artfinder actual artists are 52% women and 48% men)
The Centre circle has been split Equally of Pink for Woman and Blue for Men, to suggest Equality for both Sexes within the Art market, Yin & Yang
I have used the colour Pink to give a Post Pop Art feel and highlight Woman inequalities, and Blue for Male, with the use of vertical columns, and influenced by Artfinder’s “Cheeky Dot” circle.
For clarity of Artist names the last image has the circle removed.
