This painting began with a red base as means of it to be an experimental piece, the aim to allow some of the red to “come through” and create a different effect than is normally associated with seascape art. I wanted also to allow the red base to be visible somehow as a backdrop to the curling green wave.
“Red sky” is painted in a realistic yet expressionistic manner, weaving together these styles to form a dynamic painting of the sea. My aim is to capture the essence of the subject while "putting myself" into the work to form an image that is its own signature of the artist.
Movement is a very important part of my work, balancing line, colour, tone and detail, subtlety with obvious intention to leave certain marks or lines, to celebrate the painting as an image created by the application of paint.
