Original artwork description:

This piece signaled a change of pace for me. I was in need for something new, something creative that I personally have not seen or undertaken. This change was going to be a spiced up background. While I love the bold contrasts between a titanium white background, I was in search for something more impacting, Gold and Copper. This combo turned out to be a one two punch that gave me a tremendous challenge to work with. I essentially needed to learn how to paint again. My previous techniques would not hold up, since they would continually pick up the background flake and disturb the shading process. Unfortunetly enough, instead of breaking the rules as I always love to do, I needed to conform to them in order to create the finished product. All of the long schooling and shape, color, and motion studies came together for the first time in a long time.

The subject matter is something that I hold quiet dear to me, Evolution. The person in the painting is actually Charles Darwin. Being a science nerd myself, I find him to be a legend. His work is ground breaking and he is truly a very interesting man. But he gives off a very interesting vibe. Almost as if he knows your fate. Almost in a sense that he is saying "shhh, don't struggle, there is nothing you can do". With this I would then go to connect it to the famous sandman myth or story to create the finished piece. Not only did he push for the theory of survival of the fittest, he pushed me into a whole to art criteria which I will continue to actively pursue.

Materials used:

Grumbacher Oil Paint, Canvas, Gold Pigment, Copper Pigment
