This piece of coastline with the waves rolling onto the rocky shore is on Jamaica's South Coast, which has a rugged, untamed feel about it. The colors are rich teals and turquoise in the sea, with white, foamy breakers rolling onto the dark, wet rocks. The painting has an overall sandy ochre base, which pulls it together with an earthy feel. Although it is realistic, the style is quite painterly, with large, gestural brushstrokes. It reminds me of the power of the relentless waves, dragging at the rocky boulders and pounding them into sand. The sight and sound of the waves is mesmerizing, energizing and soothing all at the same time.
