Artist's description:

This piece is one of a series that mark a new direction in my work. I am interested in the patterns that result from writing a word repeatedly, like a mantra, in the ancient Arabic script I call Manuscript Kufic. It is characterized by broad pen lines written so tightly together only a hairline of white separates them, with the result that words are compact forms. In this series I use the word "God", which has unique plastic qualities, in reference to the Sufi practice of repeating the divine name.

The spark that inspired this series came from an unexpected direction: knitting patterns. I'm fascinated by the way so many different textures can be achieved by combining only two stitches. I translated this into combining two different inks. By strictly transcribing existing patterns (here the Brioche Rib), I relinquished control of the final outcome, and only found out what each piece looked like when it was completed. Because the pattern is written with a reed pen, the repetition is organic and quite unlike what would be achieved by mechanical means: the end pattern does evoke a handmade textile in all its tactile warmth.

The inks which provided such interesting tinted greys were homemade from natural materials. They are the result of my ongoing experiments in making art materials from foraged plants or kitchen waste. Three inks in all were used for this series; this piece features sumac ink (purplish-grey) and avocao ink (brownish-grey).

Materials used:

Homemade sumac and avocado inks
