Many parts of Devon, where I live, have a rich sandstone soil, which takes on many different shades of red/brown depending on the light. I made this print based on a view in South Devon and the idea of the red soil. I had been thinking about how to translate landscape into linocut, and was trying to see what I was looking at as receding layers of colour and shape, stripped of most of their detail. So I made four plates and printed each one on top of the last, working from the back, using blended rolls of colour.
