Artist's description:

I lived in the Black Hills of South Dakota a few years and became fascinated in learning about the Lakota Nation a.k.a. Sioux Tribe. Their world view is so intertwined with Nature, Spirituality, Ceremony, Family, storytelling, battles, animals and displacement. Being an outsider was different in this area of America. I had a very idealized view of my own making that clashed with reality. It took a long time for me to understand the real Lakota art and the symbolism. I went to a pow wow at the Badlands which is run by the tribe. The first thing the MC said was to take off your watch. It immediately relaxed me and it became a circle and I was a part of it. The dancers were in full regalia and the drum beat was hypnotic. This horse collage is inspired by ledger art done in the 1880's. Prior to that time paintings were done on animal skins. Ledger paper was the only material the artists had when they were forced onto reservations. My depiction of plenty of horses is in appreciation for a people and way of life that was once nomadic and wealth came with horses, to transport, and hunt buffalo on the plains. I grouped them together with the moms and ponies running in unison moving forward as a tribe. Protectors and kindred spirits are the four legged creatures. The depiction of horses is more internal than external. The Lakota use of space is flattened and has a real contemporary feel. My work plays with movement and overlapping space in a small composition with a lot of horsepower.
