Original artwork description:

“Pirates on the Port Side” is a delve into a whimsical Caribbean sailing adventure. There is a sailing race occurring and the fancy yacht in the foreground is decked out and ready to take home the gold. The captain and his first mate are wearing matching sailing uniforms and are taking the race very seriously! Meanwhile, a band of costumed misfits in their modern day pirate ship come out of nowhere and are pulling ahead in the race. This makes the captain very upset and he shakes his fist in anger! The moral of the story is suppose to be this: Have fun, and don’t take life (or yourself) too seriously, and in the end you will win the race. Artistically, I was happy to experiment in this piece with some elements that I hadn’t done a lot of in the past; the rigging and mechanical details in the boats, the color nuances of ocean water, and how to add implied action into a piece.

Materials used:

Oil paints
