Artist's description:

This small series of bird paintings was inspired by the historical use of symbolic animals in church ornamentation. The phoenix is a mythical bird which according to tradition dies in a burst of flames and is them reborn from the ashes. It was therefore used as a symbol of rebirth and resurrection. The use of gold and the flattening of the subject is a nod to the traditional practice of ikon painting.

Note: The painting is circular. The surrounding white is a card mount with beveled edge.

Materials used:

MDF, oil paint, gold leaf
