The inspiration for this portrait was the model herself: a teacher who is in phenomenal shape from a lifetime of dance. Her attitude, her beauty, and her insouciance practically painted themselves on the canvas, with me just being the conduit. I love when sessions just come together so easily like that. And, of course, Maya Angelou's poem has always resonated with me powerfully. Subtle strokes of yellow-green, and a little strategically-placed painterly texture add to this very colorful work.
