Artist's description:

A boat trip from Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull takes you to the spectacular but uninhabited island of Staffa with it's great basalt columns rising from the sea and the famous Fingal's Cave ( Mendelssohn's Overture Fingal's Cave, Op. 26 ).
Landing on the island can be interesting depending on the sea swell and sometimes requires some nimble footwork disembarking from the boat, but the effort is worth the risk. You are able to walk someway into Fingal's Cave which has amazing natural acoustics.
The star attraction are however, the huge colony of puffins which are natural but unintentional comedians. Take a trip to Staffa and you'll see exactly what I mean!
I took lots of photos from the boat as we were approaching Staffa and worked from them to produce this painting in my studio. Painting al fresco on the boat deck would have proved a trifle arduous given the size of the boat versus the size of the sea!
Although it was a few years ago I remember the trip well. It was a beautiful day and the whole experience inspired me to transfer this memory to canvas.
